VeganMoFo Survey #3: By Jess of Get Sconed!
Wait! I have a couple of food photos to make an entry too, but I really like this survey recently created by Jess of Get Sconed! By the way, Get Sconed! is one of my favorite vegan blogs to follow every day. I've got hundreds of blogs to read every day and I don't know how I can ever catch up with my reading. Purple once told me that she cut out the number of blogs she followed since she couldn't keep up, and I even seriously considered doing so myself, but when I did go to eliminate some, I couldn't decide which one. So I still have over a thousand blogs to tempt me in my Google reader.
1. What was the most recent tea you drank?
Oh, none. I haven't had any tea in a couple of years at least. I'm a social tea drinker and I'm not very social. That answers the question. :)
2. What vegan forums do you post/lurk on? If so, what is your username? Spill!
Post Punk Kitchen. I don't remember when I became a memeber. I gotta look it up. My username is singinghorse as well. OK, I just found out that I registered on March 22nd, 2008. I know I'm still rather behind in the whole blogging and social networking thing.
3. You have to have tofu for dinner, and it has be an Italian dish. What comes to mind first?
This is a tough one! I thought of Italian marinated tofu with pasta and baked ziti with tofu ricotta and almond cream at the same time. So which one comes first? I'll have them both if you don't mind. And I'd love to have a slice of eggplant and tomato pizza with tofu almond cream on top.
4. How many vegan blogs do you read on an average day?
Oh boy, between 215 - 330, and I still feel it's not enough. Compared with the total number of food blogs out there, this is still a small fraction.
5. Besides your own, what is the most recent one you’ve read?
Get Sconed! That's why I'm doing this survey right now.
6. If you could hang out with a vegan blogger that you haven’t met, who would it be, and what would you do?
Emily of The Partial Muse. (She recently moved to wordpress, and I'm thinking about it too.) I would quietly share a glass of soymilk and some pink cupcakes with her, and our husbands can talk.
7. If you had to base your dinners for a week around one of the holy trilogy – tofu, seitan or tempeh, which would it be?
I would definitely say tofu before, now, I'd say tempeh. When tempeh is treated well, it's so tasty. A dish like Porcini Crusted Tempeh (at Candle 79) can really satisfy the taste buds.
8. If you had to use one in a fight, which would it be?
Seitan that has just been soaked and cooked in a large pot of broth.
9. Name 3 meals you’d realistically make with that tough protein of choice!
Porcini crusted tempeh, TLC burger, and baked BBQ tempeh. I'm drooling now!
10. What’s a recipe in vegan blogland that you’ve been eyeing?
Southern Baked Tempeh with Gravy, Smashed Potatoes and Roasted Green Beans by Jessy of "happyveganface".
11. Do you own any clothing with vegan messages/brands on them?
Sadly, no! We only have a couple of shirts each though. Certainly no leather. We're not into clothing at all. Then I only own a vegan change purse I bought at Herbivore.
12. Have you made your pilgrimage to the 'vegan mecca' yet? (Portland, duh)
Yes, we have, very recently in fact. We even considered possibly relocating to Portland because of the vegan mecca reputation. I'm probably gonna get into some trouble for saying this, but I have to admit, because I don't want to hide my feelings on this subject, that as excited as we were in Portland, we couldn't believe that NYC still got PDX beat in terms of vegan dining and vegan shopping (food, clothing, etc.). It was a little sad to see that vegans are still very much marginalized even in Portland. But we will get there!
13. What age did you first go vegan? Did it stick?
24. Oh yes, it stuck alright! I love being a vegan. I feel so much more freedom and I simply love vegan food to no end! I went vegetarian for only 2-3 weeks and then vegan right away. Five years now, and I'm a lifer.
14. What is the worst vegan meal you’ve had? Who cooked it?
I don't remember having one at all. From day one, it's been great. My husband is a 25-year vegan and an awesome family chef so I never had to suffer through a bad vegan meal. When I began to cook, I got lucky too. I don't seem to struggle with cooking at all. I love food too much to spoil a meal. And it certainly helps when we cook our own food.
15. What made you decide to blog?
Mostly because I'm a vegan and I'm excited to see so many vegans out there blogging about their food and vegan life. And I think nowadays we more or less all have a little social problem going on. Life and society have become less personal in many ways, so blogging naturally becomes a good social component in our life for those of us who don't want to go to too many family and social gatherings.
16. What are three of your favorite meals to make?
Scrambled tofu (I just made one a couple of days ago), pancakes (see my recent entry), and zucchini rice gratin (actually all kinds of vegetable-grain casseroles).
17. What dish would you bring to a vegan Thanksgiving-themed potluck?
My pizza a la marinara, I guess. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving, as odd as it may sound. We're not huge fans of sweet potatoes, pumpkins or apples. No idea what's fitting. If we do end up going to a Thanksgiving-themed gathering, we will ask people what's suitable and adapt. I'll make anything.
18. Where is your favorite vegan meal at a restaurant? How many times have you ordered it?
So far, the French toast with vegan sausages at Squid & Ink in Seattle. I only went there once though, because we moved on. Then it was the porcini crusted tempeh at Candle 79.
19. What do you think the best chain to dine as a vegan is?
I honestly have no idea. We generally avoid non-vegan or non-vegetarian restaurants so that eliminates all of the chains.
20. My kitchen needs a......
Funnily, just like Jess, my kitchen needs a good sifter too. Besides that, I also need a shallow pizza pan and a deep pizza pan.
21. This vegetable is not allowed in my kitchen…..!
None. I allow them all!
22. What's for dinner tonight?
No plan whatsoever! We don't have dinners. But I'll have to think of something to cook for tomorrow's lunch. Some kind of grain with veggies, I guess.
23. If you need to prepare a vegan pizza for omnivores, what kind of pizza would it be?
Roman zucchini pizza.

I'm not a vegetarian, but sometimes my day's eating will be vegetariain - purely unintentionally (but I'm always pleased it turned out that way). Lunch today was a salad with figs, walnuts and goat cheese; dinner will be a spinach/feta quesadilla, I think...
